본문 1

Although you may not know it, you think like a scientist every day. When questions come up, you often try answering them. In doing so, you use many of the same skills that scientists use in their research, like the following.

Observing
When you use one or more of your five senses to gather information, you are observed. For example, when you hear a dog to bark or smell smoke, you are making an observation. Scientists use special instruments such as microscopes and telescopes that enhance their senses to make more detail observations. The key to observation is that it must be accurate and factual. It is therefore important to repeat the same observation.

본문 2

Inferring
After observing something, you try to interpret it or make an inference about what it is. Your inference is just an educating guess and should be based only on which is observed and what you already know. For example, if you hear a rooster to crow while you are partially asleep in bed, you combine the evidence—the crowing rooster—and your knowledge of sunrises and infer that the sun is coming up. An inference is not a fact and may turn out to be incorrect; it is only one of many possible explanations. For instance, the rooster could be crowing because there is an intruder in his pen. Therefore, it's a good idea to consider alternatives to your inference in case of it turns out to be incorrect.

Predicting
You probably know that weather forecasts are predictions about how the weather will be like. Weather forecasters predict the amount of rain, wind speeds, paths of storms, and so forth. In order to do so, they observe the weather and use their observations and their knowledge of weather patterns. The skill of predicting involves making an inference about a future event based on current evidence and past experience.

Classifying
You know that similar foods are grouped together on store shelves. This makes that easier for customers to find them. Different brands of milk sit on the same shelf, so you can compare one to another and decide which you prefer. Classifying things mean putting them in specific categories. By doing so, we know immediately what they do and how they are different from other objects. You can classify items in all kinds of ways, use size, shape, purpose, color, and so on. Scientists also use the skill of classification to more accurately understand how things relate or connect.

Making Models
A model is any simplification of or substitute for which you are trying to predict. Models are used because they are convenient substitutes, the way which a recipe is a convenient aid in cooking. Models are very common. The ingredient list on a package of cookies is a model of its contents. A box score from a baseball game is a model of the actual event. A history exam is a model designed to test your knowledge of history. When you have trouble understanding how the planets go around the sun, a model of the solar system making the concept easier to understand. Scientists also use models to help them simplifying complicated information and ideas.

Communicating
Every day you talk to people and listen to which they say. Scientists also communicate to share information, results, and opinions. By communicating, they share ideas and information and help one another finding answers to questions and problems.

Remember that in your daily life you use skills that scientists use in their job. So if your dream is to become a scientist, you are already on your way.

Think outside the box

The Zeigarnik Effect

He's good at memorizing!
Did you enjoy your meal?
Sorry, but I can't remember what you ordered.
Why did the waiter forget the orders so quick after serving the dishes?

The Zeigarnik Effect for Better Memory

While dining in a restaurant, Bluma Zeigarnik noticed that a waiter was quite capable of remembering multiple orders, but once the orders were complete and the food was served, the waiter forgetting those orders. Zeigarnik wondered why, so she conducted a series of experiments to uncover the reason.
Zeigarnik's experiments involved a group of subjects who asked to complete various tasks. Some subjects were allowed to complete the tasks, while others were interrupted and not allowed to finish. She then asked the subjects to recall the tasks. What Zeigarnik found to be that the incomplete tasks were remembered approximately twice as many as the completing ones.
Through further studies, Zeigarnik concluded that the "recall-value" of unfinished tasks to be high because it's human nature to complete a task we've already started. Who knew? If we don't finish, there's mental tension. This mental tension makes the unfinished task easier to remember, whereas completion of the task ⑬providing closure, and a release of the tension. This is ⑭what is known as the Zeigarnik Effect.
So what's the best way to remember things? Just get started. Once you've started, it's okay to take a break and ⑮distract. In fact, research shows that 90-minute sessions of productive work followed by breaks of no more than 20 minutes ⑯being most effective for ⑰increasing focus and energy during the day. Now excuse me, it's time to take a break for better memory!
