so~ that~ 구문 기초 이론

 

so ~ that(부사절 접속사) + 완전문 : 무척 ~해서 ~하다

 

so + 형용사 Vs. 부사 -> 구분하는게 중요합니다.

 

-> He was so slow that he couldn’t catch her.

-> He ran so slowly that he couldn’t catch her.

 

 

 

그리고, 다음의 구분도 중요한데요.

 

so + 형용사(분사도 가능)

 

-> so + 현재분사(~ing) Vs. 과거분사(p.p.) -> 구분하는게 중요합니다.

 

그리고, 

현재분사는 : ~하게하는, ~느낌을 주는 -> 능동의 의미

과거분사는 : ~해진, ~느낌을 받은 -> 수동의 의미

입니다.

 

The news was so surprising that he couldn’t say anything. (그 소식이 놀라운 느낌을 주는)

 

Larry was so surprised that he couldn’t say anything. (그가 놀라운 느낌을 받은)

 

 

 

그리고, so ~that S can't(과거의 경우 couldn't) 의 경우 문장 전환도 가능하죠?

네, 바로 too~to~ 입니다.(너무 ~해서 ~할 수 없다)

 

Larry was so young that he couldn’t go to the party.

= so ~ that S can’t = too 형용사/부사 to V

= Larry was too young to go to the party.

 

 

This book is so difficult that my little brother can’t understand it.

= This book is too difficult for my little brother to understand.

-> to understand 의 목적어가 바로 그 문장의 주어일 경우

즉, to 부정사의 목적어 = 그 문장의 주어 -> to 부정사의 목적어는 생략한다.

-> This book is easy to read. (O)

-> This book is easy to read it. (X)

 

 

 

그리고, so ~that S can(과거의 경우 could) 의 경우 문장 전환도 가능하죠?

네, 바로 형용사/부사 enough to~ 입니다.(무척 ~해서 ~할 정도다)

 

Larry is so strong that he can lift this rock.

= Larry is strong enough to lift this rock.

 

This book was so easy that my little brother could understand it.

= This book was easy enough for my little brother to understand.

(역시 to understand 의 목적어가 그 문장의 주어이므로 it을 쓰지 않았습니다.)
